Lucia is recently retired from a 44-year career as a laboratory scientist and healthcare educator. She obtained a Bachelor Degree in Medical Technology from Kansas State University and a Master Degree in Adult and Continuing Education from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Lucia has a medical technologist certification from ASCP and a Specialist in Blood Banking Technology from ASCP and AABB. She worked as a blood bank technologist at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri and at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. Lucia returned to Research Medical Center to work as the Blood Bank Lead Technologist, followed by being the Program Director for the Clinical Laboratory Science Program. Research Medical Center became part of an 11-hospital healthcare system and she worked as Laboratory Education and Training Specialist for these hospitals.
Lucia spent the last 14 years of her career as the Vice President of Recertification at the National Center for Competency Testing, a company that provides certification for entry-level healthcare professionals. During this time, she became a national subject matter expert in blood specimen collection.
Now retired, Lucia volunteers for The Research Foundation and Audubon of Kansas. She has served her profession by holding various positions in ASCLS-Missouri, including President.
